  • Boy or Girl??

Mr. Bee and I had genetic testing done on ourselves (a blood test) very early on in this pregnancy.  The results came back normal, and they told us that we were having a girl.  I had no idea that they could determine the sex so it was a very pleasant surprise since I've always wanted to have a girl first.  I've told everyone that we're having a girl, and have been preparing for a girl for the past two months.

That ob was kinda a quack, so I'm not sure whether to trust those results.  I only went to see her because I couldn't get an appointment with my regular ob until the 8th week of my pregnancy, which is like a million years in pregnancy time.

Today I had a 17 week checkup with my regular ob, and she said that there is no way to determine sex unless I had an amnio.  She did an ultrasound, and although it's a little too early to tell on her low resolution machine, she thinks it's a boy!

I have an anatomy screening in two weeks on a much higher resolution ultrasound machine, at which time we'll find out if it's a boy or girl.

Of course I'll be happy just to have a healthy baby, but you can imagine that this news was quite a shock!  I guess I'll just have to wait patiently to find out for sure.

Did you want a boy or a girl?

  • 17 Weeks

Tomorrow I hit 17 weeks, but I'm taking the day off to go fishing with Mr. Bee and my father in law, so I'm posting this today!  Our little baby bee is now about the size of a turnip.

    17-turnip

I learned a lesson this week.  I was trying to get a box off a high shelf, lost my balance, fell and landed on our sofa.  Perhaps my center of gravity has shifted, or perhaps it was my usual clumsiness.  To make sure that everything was ok, I busted out the doppler, found my own heartbeat and finally found the baby's strong 135 bpm heartbeat.  No more climbing up on high places for me!

The past two weeks or so I've had mild acid reflux which I've never experienced before -- it's a common side effect of pregnancy.  My belly has also become much harder like a pregnant belly, rather than the soft pot belly I've had for most of my life.  And perhaps the most shocking discovery of all... I have no desire to eat my beloved tabasco!

I tried on my biggest, loosest shorts, and they're too tight!  My belly has officially outgrown all my shorts, skirts, and pants.  I'll try to take a picture of myself sometime soon so you can see my little pot belly!

  • Baby Bee Showers

We accidentally left our backyard door open, and I got devoured by mosquitoes so I woke up and can't go back to sleep!  Evidently pregnant women are deeelicious to mosquitoes.

audreysmommie recently left me a link to this adorable bee themed baby shower.

While I would love to throw a shower as lovely as this one day, I don't want a baby shower of my own because I don't like people to do things for me, I don't want a lot of baby things, and I feel like having a shower is like jinxing everything.  Am I crazy?

I'm not going to start preparing for the baby at all until the third trimester.  Because I read so many books and did so much online research the first two times around, this time I haven't picked up a single book.  We haven't purchased a single thing.  And we haven't even talked names (well Mr. Bee has shot down the couple of suggestions I had).

Maybe I'll throw my own baby shower.... but no gifts!

  • A Different World

More changes have probably occurred in our lifetimes than in any previous lifetimes.

As I was coming home yesterday from walking Francis the pug, I saw a grandmother and her young granddaughter.  The grandmother had just taken a picture of her granddaughter with a disposable camera, and the little girl asked to see the picture.  The grandmother replied, "This isn't one of those type of cameras.  After we take all the pictures, I have to take it to the store, get it developed, and then we can see the pictures."

It'll certainly be a very different world for our kids than the one we grew up in.  I already talk about the good old days.

  • The Wisdom of Moms

I've received a lot of pregnancy advice from moms, and I thought I'd start compiling them because some of them are so funny and interesting.  I recently had dinner with my friend and her mom, and she asked me if I had been craving anything in particular.  I told her that I had been eating a lot of gooksoo (Korean noodles).  She said that I must be having a daughter then because that's what you crave when you're pregnant with a daughter.

My mom had some of her own gems as well.  If only my memory weren't so bad because I already forgot them all.

What are some of the best pieces of mom wisdom you've heard?
